How Many Catalytic Converters are In a Ford F150?

The latest model of the pickup trucks launched by Ford in its F-series has gained good reputation in the market owing to its robust features and star performance.

Ford F150 truck sports quite a capacity and is powerful in all purposes.

The internal features of the truck are as good and advanced as its outer body and on-road prominence.

So when we talk about the Catalytic Converters in the machine, their mechanism also goes in line with the same prestige.

What is a Catalytic Converter?

A catalytic converter is part of engine exhaust system which converts the toxic gases produced from power generation into non-toxic ones through chemical reactions before they are emitted out of the vehicle.

To get through the smog test or emission test for your vehicle to drive on the streets of your state on a country, catalytic converter only plays the key role.

The only thing you have to keep in mind is that your vehicle has to have a converter which is legal as per your state or country.

Because they all have their own guidelines pertaining to emission standards according to the atmosphere and climatic conditions of the region.

Types of Catalytic Converters

There exist two types of catalytic converters to non-harmful gases to be emitted into the atmosphere;

  1. One which converts only carbon monoxide & unburnt hydrocarbons, and
  2. Another which converts oxides of nitrogen also along with carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons.

These are known as "two way" & "three-way" catalytic converters respectively. Till 1981, only two-way cats were in use.

After that, due to stricter emission regulations three-way cat system was adopted in the market and is in function till date.

Depending on the design of the engine system and its mechanism, a vehicle can have one or more catalytic converters.

Catalytic Converters in Ford F150

Ford 150 comes with a dual system of catalytic converters, which makes the vehicle's emission system even more rigorous with respect to the pollution control standards.

The system has two cat converters- one at the front end and one at the back end of the vehicle respectively.

Front End Catalytic Converter

The front end cat works as usual three-way cat converters. It converts the carbon monoxide and unburnt hydrocarbons to carbon dioxide and hydrogen gas through an oxidation reaction.

And nitrogen oxides are transformed to nitrogen gas through a reduction reaction. It supports the set of exhaustion pipes running in the front side of the truck.

Back End Catalytic Converter

The back end cat supports the exhaustion pipes running through the backside of the truck. Nonetheless, the back end cat works as;

Usual three-way cat converter, i.e., it converts the carbon monoxide and unburnt hydrocarbons to carbon dioxide and hydrogen gas through an oxidation reaction. Nitrogen oxides are converted to nitrogen gas through reduction reaction, same as the front end cat.

Other than its function of converting harmful gases into harmless ones, the cat also acts as a filter for tiny particles.This can disturb the functioning of the engine system and screens the emission of any harmful gases which might have escaped the front end cat and convert them into harmless ones.

Ford F150 series has been known for their rugged performance for all its past models too. Their on-road efficiency owes greatly to the stringent pollution control measures taken while building the vehicle.

Both catalytic converters fitted in the mechanism make it better and effortless for the vehicle to get through the smog tests and emission tests.

Plus they are designed with the criteria that they pass the legal barriers in almost parts of the country, so you can be free of any apprehensions pertaining to legal concerns while opting for the vehicle.

Catalytic Converters are eventually responsible for controlling the environmental pollution occurring because of a vehicle on the road.

The on-road acceptance of the vehicle depends on their proper functioning. Hence, evidently, their quality is going to make a significant difference to the overall quality of the automobile.

Therefore, it has been always advisable to go for a vehicle fitted with best suited catalytic converters, efficient and legal for your state or country, and Ford F150 is designed for a purpose just like that.
